可爱的莉娜住在一个小镇，在一家诊所当医生。莉娜的母亲一心想让女儿结婚，还为她挑中了合适的夫婿谢尔盖·罗曼诺维奇。此人虽不算年轻，但收入体面且有认真结婚的打算。莉娜反对这门婚事，可母亲根本不听。于是，莉娜拿出护照，上面有盖章显示她已结婚，丈夫名叫安东·安德烈耶维奇·基里洛夫。与此同时，从莫斯科国际关系学院（MGIMO）毕业的安东·安德烈耶维奇·基里洛夫，正等着在父亲——一位著名政治家的关照下获得外交部的任命。就在任命即将敲定之时，父亲得知安东已婚！安东只和妻子见过一次面，甚至记不清她长啥样、住哪儿。护照上的印章其实是他朋友斯塔斯搞的疯狂恶作剧。为了避免任命前出岔子，安东动身去寻找他虚构的妻子莉娜；而在母亲的逼迫下，莉娜为找个能承认她是合法妻子的丈夫，准备前往莫斯科，两人就此相向而行。
